In East Baltimore’s Broadway East neighborhood, the Southern Streams Health and Wellness Center is taking shape as a beacon of renewal and investment.
Part of the larger East Baltimore Revitalization Plan, this $31 million project spearheaded by Mary Harvin Transformation Center CDC is transforming a long-neglected site into a hub of community growth. When complete, the center will serve as a vital anchor for health services, economic opportunity, and community support. More than just a building, this is about “restoring people and rebuilding properties” said Bishop Donte Hickman, Senior Pastor of Southern Baptist Church and President of Mary Harvin Transformation Center CDC.
Funding for the project includes $3.9 million in financing from NIIF to complement loans from the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD), and the Reinvestment Fund, as well as New Markets Tax Credit allocations from the Reinvestment Fund, Wells Fargo, and Partners for the Common Good. NIIF is honored to work alongside the Mary Harvin Transformation Center CDC, a cornerstone of the community, on this impactful project shaped by local leadership.
Once complete, the 63,000+ sq. ft. facility will:
- Deliver essential healthcare, pharmacy, and workforce development services to over 37,000 residents,
- Create 340 new, living-wage positions including 190 construction jobs and 150 permanent jobs, and
- Achieve LEED Silver-equivalent green building standards.
This project stands as a testament to the power of collaboration—where community vision, strong leadership, and strategic investment come together to spark lasting change.
At NIIF, we are proud to invest in bold, community-led efforts that are shaping a healthier, more equitable future for Baltimore.
